about me

my background

julia bennett

dip couns, MBACP

My interest in counselling, personal development and therapy started over 30 years ago and was partially inspired by the help I received as a client.

I initially trained in body therapies such as holistic massage and some years later, I began my formal studies in counselling at West Kent College in Tonbridge. I then went on to study for a BACP Accredited Diploma in Humanistic Integrative Counselling at the Wealden College of Counselling and Psychotherapy in Crowborough. The course gave me a solid grounding in client led counselling and covered Person Centred Counselling, Gestalt and Transactional Analysis. If you would like to know more about these and other models of counselling, please do not hesitate to contact me or go to It's Good to Talk/Types of Therapy

Following many years at New Romney Counselling Services, I now have a private practice in Hastings where I see individual clients and couples of all ages with a variety of issues.

I continue to develop professionally and regularly attend trainings in specific areas. I have trained to teach Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction with Kathy Ward of the Mindful Academy  http://mindfulacademyint.com/ and Bodhin Philip Woodward and of The Mindful Academy Solterenno https://mbsr.website/.  I am excited about its beneficial effects, particularly on anxiety, stress, depression, pain and self-esteem. Where appropriate, I can also weave mindfulness techniques into my counselling work and if you have completed an 8 week MBSR course, we can include aspects of your practice within your therapy sessions.

If a mindfulness based approach appeals, I have studied Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (or ACT) which combines mindfulness with behavioural therapy. It's a model that can work well for clients who prefer  a more structured approach.

I am also particularly interested in anxiety, the mind/body connection and helping clients find their authenticity. My approach can be creative and somatic (including the body), with each individual client and their situation ultimately informing how I work.

Prior to becoming a counsellor, I worked in the operational side of business and event management, as well as in creative industries (film, television and theatre) in both production and as a performer.
